The Canopy Project Kawartha Lakes (CPKL) is a volunteer-lead community group whose goal is to increase the urban canopy in the settlement areas of the City of Kawartha Lakes (CKL).
To achieve that goal, CPKL concentrates its work in the following areas:
EDUCATION: CPKL will produce programs and curricula that teach — through engaging and hands-on programming — children of all ages on the importance of the urban canopy and trees in general to the environment and our overall health and well-being.
ADVOCACY: Advocate for policies that protect and strengthen the urban canopy to all levels of government and the public at large by facilitating discussion among community stakeholders and through communication to the public through available channels.
EXECUTION: CPKL will undertake projects with citizens and partner with organizations to protect, improve and increase the urban canopy in the CKL.
COMMUNITY INTEGRATION: CPKL endeavours to connect and engage citizens and work with any and all organizations, businesses, academics, and local experts to collaboratively increase the urban canopy.
To achieve this goal, CPKL is guided by the following principles:
Transparency: CPKL will make its membership, projects and governance model freely available to the public
Open Source: CPKL will make all its materials, planning steps and work plans freely available to any other organization or group that shares the same goals to increase the urban canopy across Canada and the world.
Youth-centred: CPKL endeavours to include and promote youth in the leadership roles of the organization and in all of its activities.
Social Justice Driven: CPKL will endeavor to have its projects address issues of food insecurity, increased mental health and increased recreation activities wherever possible.
